Marine Protected Areas (MPAs): Protecting Our Coasts, Empowering Communities

The Women in Aquatic Science and Management Network (WASMaN) contributes to the design, implementation, and management of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) as critical tools for safeguarding marine ecosystems and supporting sustainable livelihoods. WASMaN brings direct, hands-on experience in MPA development in Ghana, building on a strong foundation of technical expertise and field experience.
The Network’s President played a significant role in the baseline research that supported the designation of Ghana’s first MPA at Cape Three Points in the Western Region. Her work conducted an integrated coastal ecosystem assessment to identify ecologically significant habitats, socio-economic dependencies, and cultural considerations essential for effective MPA establishment. The assessment provided a holistic understanding of the area, ensuring that conservation planning was grounded in both scientific evidence and local realities. In addition to this foundational work, she led the implementation of the Coastal and Marine Conservation Drive Project (COMADRIP) – a practical, field-oriented initiative aimed at strengthening coastal ecosystem conservation through community engagement, awareness creation, and sustainable resource management actions.
